Virgo

A real-world 5G testbed for jamming and DDoS detection research.

Virgo combines Open5GS, a gNodeB and a Mirai-infected IoT device within a 5G testbed. It supports experiments involving distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and radio-frequency jamming.

The testbed uses real Mirai malware confined within a virtual machine. An in-house mechanism, the Mirai Malware Controler (MMC), controls DDoS attack execution and is designed to support safe, controlled experiments within the isolated test environment.

The testbed enables the collection of datasets from real attack experiments in an operational 5G environment. The aim is to develop models for detecting jamming and DDoS attacks.

FPGA-based DDoS Detection

FPGA-based machine learning for DDoS detection in 5G base station environments.

This project develops a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) detection solution intended for deployment in a 5G base station environment. Detection relies on machine learning models implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA).

The solution uses Vitis Networking P4 to extract features from network traffic at line rate, and hls4ml to deploy the machine learning models on the FPGA.

The accompanying repository will host utilities developed to support the implementation and development of the detection system.
